From 1690 - 1730 pirates sailed the seas and operated outside the law. Movies and books usually portrayed pirates in a romantic light, however, pirates lives were far from pleasurable. Pirates often faced danger, hunger and death.
One of the most infamous pirates was Blackbeard. Blackbeard had been a privateer for the British government. After stealing one of the ships he had served on, he became captain and began preying upon ships traveling the American coast. He was known for his brutality. If women would not relinquish their rings, he would have their fingers hacked off.
Pirates sailing the Carribean would attack ships for their cargo of grain, molasses, grain, kegs of rum and sometimes human cargo such as slaves. If they desired a ship, they would steal the ship.
Women, dressed as men, would sometimes become pirates. Anne Bonny and Mary Read were two famous women pirates. William Kidd, Charles Vane and Sam Bellamy were other well known male pirates.
Contrary to legends of pirates hiding treasures of gold and gemstones, pirates would spend their loot on drink and women. Because of constant, battles many of the pirates lost limbs. This is were the legend of "Captain Hook" came from.
Movies today such as "Pirates of the Carribean" or "The Curse of the Black Pearl" with Johnny Depp playing an eccentric pirate are exciting and fun. Children can imagine themselves with a
pirates hat and eye patch sailing the sea with their mates in search of buried treasures. Their imaginations are limitless to the adventures they can conjure up from the myths told over the centuries. |
